Tuition - Teacher Training
Teachers are trained by Ross Johnson, who has designed a course based on his 8 years of teaching experience and his 18 years of musical training. The course runs over 6 full days and consists of 3 modules - Basic Playing, Advanced Playing and Teaching Modules. Each module is a prerequisite for the next.
The course will teach you marimba playing techniques, the history of the African marimba, traditional songs, performing techniques, drumming techniques, improvisation, the use of energy in playing, group dynamics, the amaAmbush Teaching Method and much more. The lecturers are given by Ross Johnson, who has lectured in South Africa, Malaysia, Argentina and the USA, as well as a number of guest lecturers.
At the end of the course, the teachers will have the necessary knowledge and skills to teach the marimbas. Many who successfully completed the course are now staff of amaAmbush, teaching at schools around the Cape.
The courses are run in Rondebosch, Cape Town. Previous music instruction or marimba playing experience is not a prerequisite for taking the course, but is recommended.
